Something I just don't understand

Television and other media outlets, have portrayed African Americans in a poor light. They have shown them to be poor, and unfortunately ignorant. Yet for some reason, certain groups of people seem to idolize it. They wind up copying their style of dress, and their language. Which if you ask me, perpetuates the problem. What further boggles my mind is when people who aren't even from poor urban areas decide to follow this style as well. What is so appealing about it all? Why aren't people more individual?

  1. i hate to sound like an old man here but its just the way in which they are being portrayed in things like music videos. or take the mtv show cribs. kids see these ways in which they are being portrayed and they want to be just like them.

  2. i think the affluence of black americans on tv is what wants to be emulated, i agree with mike on this one. rap videos and cribs have a direct effect on what the young folk wear these days. can you provide any examples in the media where there are poor black people that impressionable viewers look up to and try to emulate? it would help strengthen your argument

  3. There are a good number of movies out there in which inner city black kids dress like this. While they might not emulate, I think it influences, but I guess I would have to agree that the rap videos and cribs would have more influence.

  4. I agree, even though I dont realize why this is that way. It defenitley isnt logical in anyway shape or form. Maybe since the media and society has portrayed this group of people to act this way, they subcounciously feel like they have to dress this way.
